A Homecoming for Music, Arts & Culture on Mahalia’s Mile

Stewart Music Emporium is creating a new home for music and the arts at 212 E. 79th Street in the heart of Mahalia’s Mile.

Founded by mother-and-son duo Judith Stewart and Gregory Stewart, Jr., Stewart Music Emporium (SME) is transforming a family legacy into a community destination for musicians, artists, students, families, and creatives.

The Emporium will bring together a professional recording studio, music classrooms, rehearsal and practice spaces, live performance opportunities, instrument sales and rentals, and space for community events—all under one roof on Chicago’s South Side.

Chicago's South Side has given the world generations of extraordinary musical talent.

Stewart Music Emporium wants to make sure the next generation has somewhere to develop.

Musicians and creatives will have access to professional recording technology, rehearsal and practice rooms, performance opportunities, instruments and equipment, collaborative spaces, and connections with other artists.

SME will also create opportunities for professional musicians to share their knowledge by providing music instruction to children, adults, and emerging artists.

This creates an ecosystem where experienced artists can earn, teach, collaborate, and perform while helping develop the next generation.

Stewart Music Emporium represents an investment not only in a building, but in the cultural infrastructure of Chicago's South Side.

The project is supported by an award from the City of Chicago's Neighborhood Opportunity Fund (NOF), an important milestone in transforming 212 E. 79th Street into a fully realized arts and music destination.

With support from Greater Chatham Initiative, SME has continued moving the project from vision to reality.

Once completed, the Emporium will help:

  • Expand access to music and arts education.

  • Provide professional resources for South Side musicians and creatives.

  • Create opportunities for working musicians to teach and earn additional income.

  • Provide affordable rehearsal and recording facilities.

  • Create a new venue for live performances and community events.

  • Support cultural and economic activity along 79th Street.

  • Preserve and celebrate the musical legacy of Mahalia’s Mile.

  • Create pathways for young people to explore careers in music, production, media, and the arts.

SME is designed to be both a neighborhood resource and a destination—a place where Chicago's musical history helps inspire its musical future.
